Sometimes it seems as though the general public thinks ‘recycling’ is a modern phenomenon; however, society has been recovering and reusing ‘waste’ materials for millennia. This story concerns rag collecting in particular, and the bustling market around Rosemary Lane, London, where rags were sold, and which was portrayed by a number of artists in the 18th and 19th centuries. The article is illustrated with some of these portrayals.
