BAPH Monograph No. 17

Category:

Description

Legal documents associated with property transactions can be found in all archives and are important sources of primary information available to Paper Historians. This small monograph aims to bring a selection of these important documents to wider attention, alongside the large number of archives which contain this information and which are worthy of further investigation. All entries are referenced fully, providing readers with locations and to allow documents to be identified and consulted.

It is aimed primarily at those investigating Family History (in over 1400 entries there is information on many individuals working in the paper trade) and Local History (information is grouped regionally for all four areas of Great Britain, although the majority of entries relate to England). It covers a period of over 400 years, and includes a significant amount of new and previously unpublished information, mainly from the 18th and 19th Centuries.

It is acknowledged that the manuscript is at best an incomplete record of the extant legal documentation relating to paper mill property in the United Kingdom, and it is hoped that it will stimulate interested parties to research the subject further, and so provide a more complete picture for the future.
