Studies in British Paper History: Volume VIII

This two-volume book forms the last in a series of bibliographic publications planned by the author:

• Chamberlain, D., ‘Papermaking’ in the Stamford Mercury 1714-1814, BAPH Monograph No.5, London, 2015.

• Simmons, H.E.S., “Paper Mills” extracted from The Simmons Collection of Records Relating to British Windmills and Watermills, Transcribed, Corrected, Verified, Typeset and Indexed by Daven Chamberlain, BAPH Studies in Paper History Vol.VI (in two parts), London, 2018.

• Chamberlain, D, Papermaking in the 18th Century: A Sourcebook of UK Sites and Stories, BAPH Studies in Paper History, Vol.VII (in two parts), London, 2020.

• Chamberlain, D., ‘Papermaking’ in The Times 1801-1850, BAPH Monograph No.12, London, 2020.

None of these books are works of prose; rather, they list references to paper mills, makers and merchants, almost exclusively from the United Kingdom. This book widens the theme further, and introduces other related subjects such as chemical manufacturers, mine operators or agents, and rag dealers, all of whom fed the industry during this century of mass industrialisation. The aim, as with all of these books, has been to provide a series of references, most listed regionally according to county, from which authors can draw when researching local or regional papermaking history in the United Kingdom.

Information is arranged as follows between the two volumes of this work on 19th Century papermaking:
