Solberg’s Master’s thesis deals with the transfer of papermaking knowledge from China to the neighbouring region in the period 7-8th Century CE. Traditionally this has been ascribed to the taking of Chinese prisoners at the Battle of Samarkand, but Solberg’s detailed research suggests another more feasible explanation. This part (of a four-part serialisation) outlines the development of the craft up until the early twentieth century.

New Era for Manchester’s Historic Pilot Fourdrinier – Peter Ingram
The Apsley Paper Trail at Frogmore Mill in Hertfordshire is the site of the first commercial papermaking machine. Today it houses the first pilot plant installed in what is now Manchester University; this was also the world’s first pilot machine devised specifically for research and development purposes. This article outlines some of the history of both the site and the current machine; which goes to explain the recent presentation of an Engineering Award for 2019 by IMechE.
