Description
Documents associated with apprenticeship (such as Indentures and Tax Returns) can be found in a number of archives, and are important sources of primary information available to Paper Historians. This small monograph aims to bring these important documents to wider attention, alongside the large number of archives and historical publications which contain this information and which are worthy of further investigation. All entries are referenced fully, providing readers with locations and publications to allow documents to be identified and consulted.
It is aimed primarily at those investigating Family History (in around 750 entries there is information on over 1000 individuals working as Master or Apprentice Paper Makers) and Local History (information is grouped regionally for all three areas of Great Britain, although the majority of entries relate to England). It covers a period of almost 250 years, and includes a significant number of new and previously unpublished entries, many from the 18th Century.
It is acknowledged that the manuscript is at best an incomplete record of the extant Apprenticeship documentation in the United Kingdom, and it is hoped that it will stimulate interested parties to research the subject further, and so provide a more complete picture for the future.
